When can I expect to find a lower sodium version? The sodium content is currently unacceptable. If you cut sodium in half, this would be my favorite food! Until then, I can not eat this.

No MSG October 7, 2011

Dear Bobby, We do not add MSG to any products, nor do we add ingredients that contain it. Therefore, the carrageenan & dextrose in our ingredient list do not contain MSG. Under current FDA regulations, when MSG is added to a food, it must be identified as "monosodium glutamate" in the label's ingredient list. Our labels say exactly what is in the product. Nothing is hidden. Despite claims, there is no MSG in carrageenan. The confusion may occur since carrageenan is derived from seaweed, and one of the important natural sources for MSG is a brown seaweed called kombu. However, the carrageenan used in Applegate product is extracted from red seaweeds which contain much less MSG than kombu. In addition, any MSG that may be present in the seaweed is washed our during the carrageenan extraction process. A private firm was hired to measure potential MSG levels and what the test demonstrated is that it was below 10mg/kg of detectable glutamic acid - meaning none could be detected.

Please remove Carrageenan and Dextrose from your products. October 7, 2011

My wife and I love your products that we can eat without reaction. There are a few items that is in your food that is not something a cook would add but worse, they are clean lable items that can contain MSG.
Carrageenan and dextrose are two items that have made us sick when we eat them. The process of extracting them from corn or seaweed results in the creation of MSG and we have to stay away. These are are known clean label items. I would love it if you replaced these items with lemon or salt or flour. Something else to preserve taste and texture other that these items you dont find in any kitchens anywhere. Please leave the chemicals out of your food.

I've been eating AF oven roasted turkey for years. It's a staple in this house. I never noticed the saltiness until recently when I went on a reduced sodium diet. The next time I ate some of the turkey I thought, "Whoa! This stuff is SALTY!!!" I'd never noticed it before because it wasn't any saltier tasting than anything else I was eating. I actually came here today to check on the sodium content because I was surprised at how salty it tasted to me. Seeing all the discussion about sodium/salt tells me that I'm not the only one who will say Thank You when you roll out a reduced sodium turkey breast.

Salt as an antimicrobial September 15, 2011

Hello Debra, Thanks for the comment about the salt. Since our products do not contain any preservatives, salt plays a large role as an antimicrobial. Once we are confident that we can reduce the amount of sodium without compromising food safety or shelf life, we will make the change to a lower sodium recipe. Saying that, we are actually rolling out new high pressure process to try to reduce the amount of salt we use like you suggested! Stay tuned!

I tried a packet and it was OK...but even though it doesn't have the nitrates it still has too much salt. Surely in today's world of our rapid transportation system there can't be that need for soo much salt to preserve food...

Dear Andrew & Michael, Thanks for writing in with your concerns. Please know Carrageenan is approved by the USDA & the FDA as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). Carrageenan has also undergone extensive research throughout the years and the results have been very favorable. The most common misunderstanding regarding Carrageenan is its confusion with the substance known as Poligeenan. This confusion stems from the fact that Poligeenan is often referred to as "degraded Carrageenan”. However, Poligeenan is a completely different substance than Carrageenan, even though it does have similar qualities. The Sodium Lactate that we use in some of our products is an organic salt produced during the fermentation process of sugars from beets. Sodium Lactate is used in some of our products because it is a microbial growth inhibitor that is especially effective against Listeria and Salmonella, and therefore serves as an effective means to ensure the shelf life of our products.

I like to make sure that every ingredient I put into my body pushes my body in the direction of health and the only reason I don't buy this product is because of the carrageenan and sodium lactate. I think i'm far from the only person who has this belief who buys or would buy your products. Have you considered not using these ingredients for maybe a new product line or just in place of this product line. I know this stuff is FDA approved and whatnot, but that doesn't mean it promotes health, so I don't purchase this item.

People need to realize that salt is not bad for you! Synthetic sodium chloride (table salt) can cause some problems- yes. But good quality sea salt attached to all its many mineral co-factors is NOT a threat to your health.
Sea salt would be nice to see on the label instead of just "salt".

Im sorry but this Turkey was not worth the money. First of all, it didnt even taste like turkey,its slimy exterior and then that string or whatever that plasticky material is that is on the ends was awful. I threw out the entire package after tasting it,I wouldnt even feed it to my dog. I will stick w/freshly roasted turkey breast anytime

I love this Turkey. However, I'm finding the Nutrition Label of my product doesn't match what is shown on your website. My product shows 0g of Carbohydrates. Where as, the label shown online is 1g Carbohydrate. Which is correct? Also, thank you for looking into trying to lower the Sodium...that would be a MAJOR plus :)
