Natural Sunday Bacon

Declared by The New York Times to be, “…superb, filled with the flavor and aroma that makes everyone gravitate towards the kitchen,” our Sunday Bacon possesses all the flavor of old fashioned country bacon without added nitrites or chemical preservatives. At Applegate, we take our bacon seriously. We use select cuts of antibiotic-free pork, and season it with natural ingredients like sea salt and brown sugar. Then we smoke it for hours over applewood. Whether you’re preparing an old-fashioned country breakfast or an elegant dinner salad, Sunday Bacon is a perfect choice for people as serious about taste as they are about health.

YUM! August 29, 2010

Reviewer: Tarra T.

I LOVE this bacon. My favorite pairing is bacon and eggs. I was thrilled to find this bacon...it's a great compliment to my organic cage-free eggs. My only complaint is that I wish more stores carried it in my area.

High Quality Bacon August 22, 2010

Reviewer: Rob A.

This is in my opinion the best commercially available "humane" bacon out there. Flavor and crispiness are excellent. The price is higher than most, which is probably good, otherwise I’d be tempted to eat it more than just every other Sunday. I wish there was a thicker version out there.

Good bacon July 22, 2010

Reviewer: vieva j.

Applegate ... Sunday Bacon is better than any other natural or organic bacon I have pruchased. It lays flat, fries evenly and has less fat. We like the flavor. Great in BLTs. Other brands are thicker, &G fat parts are not done when lean is well done. Too much fat in total. Recently 'Sunday Bacon' has not been available where I always shop!

I tried to give this 5 stars in my review. (See below.) It came out as one star by mistake. Just wanted to be clear I am giving the product a FIVE STAR review!

I have been buying a local store brand of naturally cured bacon. For some reason, as it cooks, it releases vapors that cause me to choke and have difficulty breathing. That CAN'T be good! I was very pleased to discover that this does not happen with Applegate Farms bacon. And the taste of the Applegate bacon is also far superior - less salty and a delicious flavor. Worth the extra money, not to mention the 45 minute drive to the health food store to purchase it.

This is the first time I'd tried organic bacon. My family and I found it extremely salty.

This bacon is the best May 24, 2010

Reviewer: Harold H.

...but there is only one problem...I have to drive 22 miles to buy it, my local stores don't carry it! I guess it helps me not eat too much, which I would do if I could.

Your Sunday Bacon has been a favorite of mine for years. I have a lot of allergies and want to thank you for making a product that is free of soy, corn, dairy, additives, etc. I appreciate it. Thank you for being certified humane as well. Liz

Celery, Nitrates & Nitrites March 4, 2010

Reviewer: Applegate F.

We’ve heard that some suppliers of celery juice—which is used in the process of natural meat curing— have grown their celery in over-fertilized fields, causing concern about increased level of nitrates in food. Our celery suppliers practice sustainable crop rotation, do not over-fertilize, and at best, add properly composted manure to the soil before planting. Our celery suppliers alternate their fields between celery and legumes, creating a bio-dynamic relationship wherein each crop naturally contributes nutrients to the other. The starter culture used naturally converts celery’s nitrates to nitrites, the preservative that inhibits the growth of bacteria and microbials, such as botulism, in food. Very little celery juice is used in our products, resulting in low amounts of nitrites – much lower than commercial products. Finally, pathogens are controlled not only by the presence of nitrites, but through proper sanitation, pH control, and heating/cooling techniques.

Best Bacon Ever February 13, 2010

Reviewer: Becca T.

I'd been buying this bacon for a while, and then my grocery store stopped selling it. I tried another brand and it was disgusting, burning in the pan and not having the same delicious bacon flavor as this brand. I don't know what it is, but this bacon is the best ever.

Katie Couric News Piece February 11, 2010

Reviewer: Consumer G.

Katie; Their animals have way more pussy wounds in the meat than animals using safe antibiotics with no traces left when they are killed. Also, those "natural, uncured" products, which they claim are free from nitrates and nitrites, well Applegate knowingly uses fake, engineered cellery powder, which is sky high in nitrate. The seller of that powder forces the nitrate into the celery by applying toxic amonia fertilizer onto the celery just prior to harvest - thus the nitrate is thousands of times above normal celery. Applegate knows and likes that fake celery, because they need lots of nitrate. They use the lactic acid starter culture to turn part into nitrite... the bad stuff... which makes the color pink. The real problem is that the product ends up much more dangerous than regular bacon -sky high nitrates, and MUCH more susceptible to bad bacteria - pathogens. USDA knows about this. Watch for my upcoming podcast on Youtube (Consumerguy1999), as well as US university research.
